Whenever I pick up a Roald Dahl book, I know I am in for something unforgettable, and it always starts with his characters. His names alone spark curiosity, Willy Wonka, Miss Trunchbull, the Big Friendly Giant, each one sounding so peculiar and playful that I cannot help but want to know more about them before even reading a single page.
His writing itself feels magical in a way few other authors manage. Dahl mixes humour with darkness, kindness with mischief, creating stories that surprise me at every turn. Even when something feels strange or slightly scary, I find myself laughing moments later, unable to put the book down.
More than anything, Dahl takes me into worlds bursting with excitement and wonder. In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I remember gasping at the chocolate river and the Everlasting Gobstoppers, dreaming of walking through Wonka's factory myself. In Matilda, I cheered as she used her cleverness and quiet magic to stand up against unfair adults, feeling as though ordinary children truly could be extraordinary. And in The BFG, I was swept into a world of dreams and giants, marvelling at how something as simple as a jar of dreams could feel so wondrous.
What makes Dahl so special is that his stories never feel like lectures. Instead, they feel like invitations into worlds where imagination has no limits and where kids, not adults, hold the real power. That is why, no matter how many times I reread his books, they never lose their magic.
